PPG FLO-GARD™ Food Grade Silica: Efficient Functional Additives for Food & Feed Manufacturing

Created on Today
Historical production of synthetic precipitated silica in the 1930s
As the pioneer of synthetic precipitated silica in the world, PPG Industries developed the first synthetic precipitated silica in the 1930s, and has more than 30 years of application experience in the food field. Its FLO-GARD™ series of food grade precipitated silica has been widely recognized by food formulators worldwide, providing safe, efficient and sustainable flow conditioning, anti-caking and carrier solutions for the global food and feed industry, solving core pain points such as powder caking, poor fluidity and difficult liquid loading in food production.
Application of FLO-GARD SP in food production
The core product of the FLO-GARD™ series, FLO-GARD SP, has a median particle size of 45μm, a DOA oil absorption value of 275mL/100g, and a liquid carrying capacity more than 40 times that of maltodextrin, with a maximum loading rate of up to 67%. Only a small amount of addition can convert liquid flavors, nutrients, oils and other liquid active ingredients into dry free-flowing powder, greatly reducing the amount of carrier used and production costs. The product improves powder fluidity through multiple mechanisms: isolating irregular food particles, adsorbing surface moisture of particles to eliminate agglomeration, forming a dry lubricating layer on the surface of sticky particles, and stabilizing electrostatic charge to prevent particle adhesion. It can effectively avoid clogging of screens, hoppers and conveying equipment, optimize the packaging and production process, and its low dust design greatly reduces dust generation during processing, improving the occupational safety of the production workshop.
Properties of PPG food grade silica
PPG food grade silica is a synthetic amorphous precipitated silica, with no detectable crystalline silica, chemically inert, insoluble in water, odorless and tasteless, with a neutral pH value, and will not affect the flavor, color and nutrition of food. The full series complies with FDA 21 CFR and FCC standards, has obtained Kosher certification, and is widely used in condiments, powdered drink mixes, instant coffee, milk powder, protein powder, baking mixes, powdered sugar and other food scenarios. PPG has a professional global technical service team, which can provide customized product selection and process optimization solutions according to customer application scenarios, and help food enterprises achieve green and sustainable production while improving production efficiency.
