EU releases safety assessment report on silica as food additive
On January 18, 2018, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) released document 10.2903/j.efsa.2018.5088, which released a safety assessment report on silicon dioxide (E 551) as a food additive.
According to Appendix II and Annex III of Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, synthetic amorphous silica (SAS) is authorized as a food additive in the European Union (EU). Currently, its safety has been re evaluated, and the panel has concluded that EU regulations on silica are insufficient to fully characterize silica used as a food additive. The measurement methods used should include descriptions (such as median, etc.), nanoscale, etc., and should comply with EFSA guidance documents. There are no reported limit requirements for the use of silica (E 551) from existing databases. Due to the limitations of the available databases mentioned above, it is not possible to confirm the current "unspecified" ADI. The group suggests making some revisions to the EU regulations for silica.
