"Breaking! Chemical giant Evonik closes two major silica factories in the United States"
Evonik has announced that it will make major adjustments to its silica production facilities in the United States. As part of the strategic asset network optimization plan, the move aims to improve operational efficiency. It is reported that the fumed silica production plant in Watford, New York State, will stop production in the middle of 2025, and the precipitated silica production line in Havre de Grace, Maryland, will also be shut down in the middle of 2026. Emmanuel Auer, the Global Head of Evonik's Smart Effects business line, pointed out that the structural changes in the market and the industry require the company to strategically reposition its asset network. He emphasized that this decision is made to enhance competitiveness, optimize the cost structure, and reduce business complexity, so as to build a more robust business framework. Auer revealed that the company is exploring a new hub concept to take advantage of economies of scale and considering backward integration with partners. The closure of the factories in Watford and Havre de Grace and the relocation of production are important components of this strategic transformation. According to the Carbon Black Industry Network, the Evonik Watford plant currently has 24 employees and mainly produces fumed silica, while the plant in Baltimore, Maryland, has 42 production workers.
